The next morning, Kairi woke up at five but didnt get out of bed until seven. She really didnt feel like waking up at all. She groggily got dressed and made her way down the stairs where Riku sharpened his sword and Aranel rocked in a chair working on a quilt. Good morning, Kairi, Aranel greeted without looking up, Feeling any better? Yes, she lied. Her head pounded and her eyes burned like liquid fire. Thats good, Riku said, holding his sword up to the light to examine it. Kairi sighed and walked into the kitchen for some water. Oh, by the way Kairi, Aranel called from the living room, Mrs. Dundle says she hopes you feel better and will talk to you some other time. What did she want anyway? Kairi asked, waking back into the living room drinking water. Aranel shrugged. I do not know. Kairi glared at her for no reason and went out to the ranch. It was no different than yesterday. The sky was gray and thunderous clouds roamed across it. The only thing different was that this time, all the horses were out grazing and running around the huge ranch grounds. Aranel mustve made Riku do this, She chuckled. She felt something tug on her belt and she looked down to see Arlhach pulling on her. She smiled and crouched down to pet the horse. Gmorning little one, she whispered. Arlhach snorted and nuzzled her chin. Kairi laughed stood up. Cmon Arlhach, she said, Lets fill the troughs with water. Kairi grabbed the bucket next to the back door and went over to the well. She set the well down and grabbed the lever for the well. She lowered the bucket that was attached to the well into the water. The bucket filled with water and Kairi began to pull it up. She grunted and struggled with the heavy water and tried with all her strength to get it up. She managed, somehow, to get the bucket out and locked securely back in place. She then picked up the bucket she placed next to the well and poured the water into the bucket. She wiped the sweat from her brow and brought the water over to a trough near the entrance to the coral. She heard loud laughter and prancing horses in the distance. She looked up to see a squadron of soldiers riding up to the ranch. Oh great, Kairi sighed with disappointment. Now I must deal with obnoxious soldiers. Arlhach hid behind Kairi and poked his head around her legs to watch the soldiers. Greetings! The soldier in the front called out to Kairi. Good morrow to you. Kairi bowed her head and continued working. Are you the owner of this here ranch? He asked. She looked at him coolly. Do I look like the owner of this ranch? She asked him. The soldiers began to whisper and laugh at Kairi and her spicy tongue. Aye, I see you are not the talking type. He laughed. Where is the owner of the ranch? Right here, Aranel called walking out to the soldiers and Kairi. How may I be of your service? The men began to whisper louder and glance at Aranel. The lead soldier hopped down from his horse and walked over to Aranel. You are quite a beauty mlady. He said and kissed her hand. Aranel blushed deep red. Why thank you kind sir. How may I help you? Well, my men and I have just emerged from a battle against those foul demons. He explained. And we are quite weary and thirsty. May we ask for some water? Of course sir, Aranel said happily. I am Aranel by the way. The soldier bowed his head. And I am Captain Crosser. It is nice to meet you mlady. And I thank you for your kindness. Aranel smiled. Please, make yourself at home and do try the obstacle and archery courses. She turned to Kairi. Kairi, dear, will you fetch these men some water? Kairi rolled her eyes, finished dumping the water in the trough and walked back over to the well. For a brief moment, her eyes met with another soldiers. He couldnt be more than her age. She had short light lavender hair that brushed over his sapphire eyes, creating shadows on his face, giving him a mysterious look. Kairi thought he saw him blush but she didnt really care. As the men spread out across the ranch, Kairi walked slowly over to the well, with Arlhach closely following. She threw the bucket down on the grassy and released the well bucket into the well carelessly. The bucket filled with water and she began to heave the bucket out. Her arms were weak from the last time and she froze. She couldnt go anymore. Her arms began to shake and loose grip of the bucket. The rope finally slipped though her grasp and fell back down. Here, lemme help. A kind voice suggested from behind her. Kairi spun around to see the blond soldier with a bright red face. She couldnt tell if it was just from his heavy armor or from something else. NO thank you, she said, I can handle it. She began to pull the bucket back out but it slipped again. The soldier ran up from behind and grabbed it before it hit the bottom. Are you sure? He laughed. She said nothing. Why not let him? She asked herself. The less work for you. She let him help her get the water out and pour it into the other bucket. Thank you. She said quickly. She shoved passed him and went over to the other trough, Arlhach quickly ran after her and so did the soldier. So what is your name? He asked her. Kairi eyed him. Why do you wish to know? The soldier blushed again. Well, I just thought I mean I just wanted er I- My name is Kairi, she interrupted. Kairi, he breathed, That name is beautiful. Thank you. She said as she poured the water in the trough. Oh, I must get water for you all. She ran back to the well and quickly refilled it. The soldier helped her again. Um, my name is Trunks, he stuttered. Kairi rolled her eyes. So what? she said in her head. Hello then Trunks. She said somewhat annoyed. She offered him a drink of the water but he turned it down. She rolled her eyes and walked around the ranch offering the other soldiers water. She ignored Trunks as he told her stories of training, war, and settling down after the war. She grew a little suspicious of him when he said that he was searching for a woman to take care of but wasnt too dependent: he looked right into her eyes when he said that. So, um, how long have you been working here? Trunks asked when he followed her into the barn. All my life, she sighed as she patted Arlhachs nose as she put him in his stall with Duin. Really? He piped. Your parents let you work here this long? She stopped. She wanted a mother and father a lot lately. I hate to say but, I havent parents. Trunks face drained of color. He looked as if he had just murdered an innocent child. Im so sorry I didnt know I was just Whatever, she shoved passed him again into the house and up into her room. She slammed the door behind her and flopped down into her bed. She sat up after a moment and looked out the window. Trunks was looking up at her with a sorry expression on his face. What is his deal? She asked herself and fell back. Hasnt he ever scene a depressed ranch girl before? Soft knocking came from her door. Kairi groaned. She wanted to be left alone for a while. What Aranel? She asked sounding somewhat annoyed as she pressed a pillow over her face. Are you alright? Aranel asked stepping in Kairis room. Kairi grunted. Whats wrong dear? Why did you storm up here so quickly? Kairi nodded out her window to where the soldier was. That soldier out there. He was following me all over the ranch telling me about his training period when he first joined the military, war stories and other crap like that. Aranel looked slyly at her younger and oblivious sister, Oh really? Yeah, She continued glaring out the window. What the heck is his deal? And why wont he leave me alone? Aranel laughed softly and sat down on Kairis bed. Well, hes obviously infatuated with you. Kairi looked at her sister baffled. What? She shouted. Well infatuation is I know what infatuation is thank you! She shouted again and shot up from her bed. Why on earth would he be infatuated with me? Theres nothing I give out that shows I want romantic attention! Aranel laughed softly to herself. Well dear sister, I think hes just drawn to you. You do have a mysterious presence and you are one of the finest young ladies in Dur Sigil, and Im not just saying that. When you come with me to town, many men turn their heads to look at you. Hn, whatever, Kairi walked over to her window and peered out. She looked for the soldier who was giving her courtship and saw him in the same place where she left him but talking to another soldier. The sooner they leave the better. She grumbled and walked over to her dresser. Theyre not so bad, Aranel sighed walking up behind Kairi. They seem quite nice to me. You think everyones nice. Kairi mumbled. Kairi, just go down stairs and finish your chores. But Aranel- No buts, just go finish them alright? All you have to do is take the cows back in the barn. Thats all. Fine, she mumbled and stormed out of her room-her sanctuary- into the soldier infested yard. She saw Riku and Captain Crosser speaking to each other. She figured they were walking about a battle or something along those lines that she really didnt care about. Keeping her eyes on the ground, Kairi made her way over to the cows grazing area to gather them up. Just dont let me run into him she prayed, referring to Trunks. Once she was out in the field, she looked up and saw the family cows; Fëawen and her calf Mae-Mae. Kairi didnt have to say anything to get their attention. They were already at her side, ready to go back into the barn. She smiled. Thanks for making it easy for me, you two. She led the cows down the worn grass path to the barn where she opened the doors and showed them inside. There you go. She sighed once they were inside and she had shut the door to their pin. See you guys in the morning. Kairi then turned around and strode out, relieved that the days chores were over. She finished locking up the barn doors to keep the Bandits out and went to go inside. As she was walking, keeping her eyes to the ground again, she bumped into someone. Watch it! She barked. She glared up at the person who carelessly knocked into her and groaned- it was Trunks. Sorry, Mlady, he apologized quickly. I wasnt paying attention. Obviously, she mumbled and pushed her way past him. She felt his eyes still on her and she felt herself blush. What the hell am I doing? She screamed in her head. She felt someone grab her arm and she became irritated. What the hell do you want? She yelled and spun around to face Trunks. Um, well, I was just going to say sorry. He looked at the ground and his cheeks turned red. Kairi raised an eyebrow. For what, she demanded. For bumping into you mlady. Its not that big a deal! She turned around to walk away but once again Trunks grabbed her. I was going to ask you a question too. Kairi sighed with irritation and looked at him. What? Erm, uh, do you know archery? Kairi rolled her eyes. Everyone in this part of Dur Sigil does, she answered in her head. Yes, she answered aloud, Why? Well, theres a course down at Crystalline City, and I was wondering if you would like to go there with myself and a few of my friends. Sorry, but Im rather busy. She answered quickly. I wasnt saying now- No, Im sorry. But no. With that she turned around and stormed into the house. Well? Aranel asked slyly once she entered. Ah shut up Aranel.
