"Videl's Other Side"

Chapter 1

A cool breeze blew across the streets as Gohan slowly stepped forward to, hopefully, his new job. It took him a while to find the office, as he had never been to that part of town before, and as he searched the streets, all he could see were shops and diners. He figured he’d taken a wrong turn somewhere and turned around to look at the map on the corner behind him as he saw a poster on the wall. It was an advertisement for a tournament of the martial arts, to be held in the US next week. He ripped it from the wall and read on. There was a reward of 5 million Zeni for whoever won the finals, and 2 million for the runner-up. A smile appeared on his face as he forgot all about the job and headed home.

‘’Hey, honey,’’ He said as he entered his house and kissed Videl on the cheek.

‘’How did it go?’’ She asked, looking at the poster still in his hand.

‘’I didn’t go. I saw this and decided I wouldn’t need a job if I won this thing.’’

He handed her the poster to allow her to examine it. Her face lightened up as she saw the reward for the first two spots. Even if Gohan didn’t win, a second place would be able to support them for a few years at least. As she prepared to say it was a good idea, Gohan had already ascended the stairs to pack his suitcase. He already knew Videl would agree to it. She stepped up the stairs herself and entered their room.

‘’Packing already?’’ She asked with a frown on her face.

‘’Yeah. The tournament doesn’t start until next week, but you need to personally sign up and registration closes in two days. I’ll have to rush.’’

‘’Oh,’’ Videl responded as she looked down at the poster again. He was right; registration was required within two days. ‘’Should I join in too?’’

Gohan looked up, not having thought about that. He was almost sure Videl had given up fighting ever since they got married, just as he had. He still packed a punch, though, and was sure he stood a good chance of winning. Videl’s safety meant everything to him, but he didn’t know how to tell her to stay at home.

‘’Uhm… I-uh. They don’t have a women-division, I think…’’ He managed to stutter.

Videl’s eyes went back to the poster and to her dismay; she saw no mention of women being able to enter. She took Gohan’s excuse for what it was and tried to cheer up and answer with a simple ‘’Oh, well.’’

‘’I should probably go now, it’s a long flight and I don’t have a ticket yet…’’ Gohan said.

Videl nodded and wrapped her arms around her husband’s neck, kissing him on the lips. He returned it gladly, and after about a minute of them tasting each other’s lips, they broke and Gohan grabbed his suitcase. It was only half full, but he wouldn’t need much more than his fighting gear and some spare clothes. He gave her a last look and walked out of the room and down the stairs. She walked out as well and leaned over the railing of the staircase.

‘’Good luck!’’ She yelled as he stepped out of the front door and smiled at her as he closed it.
A few moments later, she heard his car start and drive off. Her look returned to the poster before she fumbled it up and tossed it into the garbage can. She walked downstairs and sat down on the couch in the living room. It had been so sudden. In less than half an hour she had found out he’d be gone for over a week and he had left. A single tear rolled down her cheek as she thought about being alone for that time. She grabbed the phone and called Chi-Chi’s house.

‘’Hellooooo?’’ Her voice sounded on the other side after a few moments.

‘’Hi, Mrs. Son. It’s Videl. Gohan just left to fight in a tournament in the US and I don’t think I can be alone for a week. Is it alright if I come over?’’

It took a few moments before she got an answer, as she heard rumbling on the background. Chi-Chi was probably cooking again.

‘’I’m sorry, dear, but I’m afraid it’s quite busy here as it is. Goten is going to fight too, and he’s literally dragging me to go with him, so we’re not going to be here either. In fact, we’re leaving in a few minutes, Goten just wants to wait ‘til the cookies are done.’’

‘’Oh…’’ Videl said, disappointed. Apparently, Goten would be fighting with Gohan at the tournament. At least it increased the chances of winning, but she felt even more alone now. ‘’Well, tell him I said ‘’Good luck,’’ then, okay? Goodbye, Mrs. Son.’’

‘’Goodbye, dear.’’

Chi-Chi hung up and Videl listened to the tune of the phone for a moment before she hung up as well. Could it be she was all alone? No, she wasn’t. She picked up the phone again and dialled a different number. It took a lot longer this time, and she was about to hang up as she heard the phone being picked up.

‘’Yello!’’ A young man’s voice said, sounding quite tired.

‘’Hey, Trunks. It’s Videl.’’

‘’Hi. You’re Gohan’s wife, right? What’s shakin’?’’

‘’Yes, I am. Well… Gohan’s off to fight in some tournament in the states, and Goten’s going too, with his mother. I’m kind of alone here, I just wanted somebody to talk to.’’

‘’I know how you feel. Vegeta and mom have already left; they’ve taken Mini Me too. He’ll probably enter the youth division.’’

Videl thought about the last statement for a second. Mini Me would be Trunks’ 11 year-old self, and he’d be fighting Goten in the junior league. The thought of Vegeta entering made her shiver, as she feared for Gohan’s chances to beat him. If they were matched up early on, he could kiss any reward goodbye.

‘’Shouldn’t you be there too?’’ She asked, realising he was still there while the rest were already gone.

‘’Naah. I’m not even from this time; I have no real business here besides keeping my family company. Dad would probably make me enter if I went along, so I thought I’d stay and get to know the city a bit. I just got back from the future and I haven’t seen most of the beautiful sights here. I was just finished with my training routine when you called. Good thing you did when you did, because I was just about to leave. You would’ve missed me if you called any later.’’

‘’Wow, good timing, I guess,’’ Was all she could say at first as she let the rest sink in. This was indeed not the immature Trunks she knew since she hooked up with Gohan; this version was grown up and even older than her. She hadn’t faced him in person yet, but she had known who he must’ve been as he had picked up the phone. ‘’Uhm… Sorry if this sounds crazy, but would you mind staying in today so I can come over and hang out with you for some time? I’m really not used to being alone for such a long time.’’

‘’Sure, I can always go out later. Feel free to come over.’’

Videl sighed with relief, drawing out a soft chuckle from Trunks as he heard it.

‘’Okay, I’ll see you in a few then,’’ She said happily.

‘’Alrighty.’’

They both hung up simultaneously.

Videl sighed once again and thought about what an adult Trunks would look like. She figured the muscular build his younger self had would be magnified, but to what extent was unknown to her. She figured his purple hair would be about the same, and his slightly puffy cheeks would have slimmed down. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t form a grown image of Trunks in her mind and decided to head over to find out when she realised something.

‘’What should I wear?!’’
