Till Time Do Us Part

Part 1

Goku tenderly held his wife in his arms, and, gazing lovingly into her eyes, noticed the tears that welled up and threatened to spill over. The sight caused a stab of guilt to work its way through to his very core. He knew that she hated it when he went off fighting like this, that she was terrified that one day he might never return to her, but she never complained, never said a word about it.

‘Oh Chi Chi, I’m so sorry about this. I…’

He broke off as she pulled his head down and kissed him passionately.

‘Its ok, Goku, its ok. Look, I’ll be fine. You just concentrate on doing what you have to do, ok?’
Anyone else would have thought that Chi Chi was fine, as she intended for both her husband and her son to think, but Goku could hear the slightest tremor in his wife’s voice. Their eyes locked for a second, no more, but that was ample time for Goku to read all the pain and fear that was inside.

Not knowing what to do, Goku leaned forwards and murmured, ‘I love you Chi,’ into her ear, before giving her one last kiss, and this time the tears did spill over. He knew how angry she would be with herself for this, so he acted like he couldn’t see the tears that were making large wet patches on the front of his gi as he held her tight, then nodded to Gohan.

As the two of them flew off, Chi Chi waved until they were both out of sight, then turned and walked into the house. Only then did she allow the sobs to burst forth. Why did he always have to go off and fight like this? Why did he always leave her alone for months on end? Why couldn’t she be stronger, why couldn’t she help him? Even her young son was stronger than she was.

A small voice in the back of her head scoffed at this. Of course he’s stronger than you are. Look at who his father is. Do you really think that you could possibly be stronger than a Saiyan, or even a part-Saiyan? And you know why Goku always leaves you. You knew that this would happen even before you married him.
*
Meanwhile, Goku was having an inner battle of his own. He told her he loved her, that she was everything to him, and then he went and broke her heart over and over. How could he do something like this to the woman he loved with all of his entire being?

The knife of guilt was stabbing at him repeatedly, until all that he could feel was the massive burden that even he couldn’t bear. All of a sudden, he realised what he had to do to make things right, the way they should be. He also realised the enormity of the price that would have to be paid.

He stopped dead. Gohan stopped a little way ahead, then turned around.

‘What’s wrong dad?’ he asked.

Goku flew to him, and, blinking back tears, wrapped his arms tightly around his son. ‘I'm sorry Gohan. I'm so sorry. I love you so much, I really do.’ Then, before Gohan could say anything to him, he put two fingers to his forehead and ‘instant transmissioned’ himself to where he knew Trunks kept his time capsule.

‘Oh man, I feel really bad. This is practically stealing,’ he muttered to himself, desperately trying to distract himself from thinking of what he was about to do, of the price that would have to be paid...
... The price was his son’s very existence.

*
As Goku clambered inside the capsule, he couldn’t stop the tears from running down his face at the thought of what he was about to do to his one and only son. He felt dizzy from the whirl of emotions that were warring inside his head, tugging him first one way, then the other, the two sides constantly arguing with each other.

You claim you love him, yet you’re going to kill him?

No! No. It…it’s not the same as killing. He just won’t (Goku couldn’t control the sobs that now racked his entire frame) won’t have existed…

There’s a difference? Anyway, what about his friends?

If he hasn’t existed, then no one will remember him having lived, because he won’t have. He’ll really only be a thought. My thought. I'm the only one who’ll feel the pain. Me! No one else!

Goku collapsed onto his knees, clutching at his head.

‘Why?' he whispered. 'Why did you have to love me Chi Chi? What did I ever to deserve you? And why did you make me love you?’
Calming down slightly, he made up his mind.
