Till Time Do Us Part

Part 3

After both Krillin and Goku had been given senszu beans to help them recover, everyone began to congratulate Goku on his tremendous victory.

‘That was great, Goku!’

‘Good on ya!’

‘You should’ve seen his face!’

‘You were incredible!’

Piccolo inclined his head towards Goku, a small, triumphant smile on his lips. [AN: does Piccolo even have lips? Ah well.]

Vegeta, however, displayed his intense dissatisfaction that he hadn't been able to fight by shooting the usual daggers at everyone in the group before taking off so fast everyone else choked and spluttered in the dust cloud he kicked up.

‘Thanks guys,’ Goku said, trying to fend everyone off, ‘but I feel a bit tired. It think I'll head home now.’

He started to fly back home.

‘Hey Goku, where’re you going?’ Krillin called out after him, slightly confused. ‘Master Roshi’s is that way,’ he said, pointing in the opposite direction of where Goku was facing.

Goku turned back to Krillin.

‘I'm going home. Why…’

His voice trailed off as he realised that he no longer had a home to go to, or a loving family waiting to greet him.

‘I…I'm not really going anywhere. I guess I just wasn’t thinking what I was doing.’

His voice broke, despite his efforts to contain the sobs that threatened to burst forth yet again.

By now everyone was starting to get worried about Goku, but Krillin was already way past just being worried. He knew Goku better than anyone else- sometimes he even thought he knew Goku better than Goku knew himself- but Goku hadn’t acted like this since he had lost his tail many years ago, and even then he hadn't been this upset.

He went up to Goku.

‘Goku, are you sure you’re ok?’ he asked, the concern in his voice obvious for all to hear.

Goku knew that if he tried to answer Krillin, the tears would start up again, so instead he took off, flying at top speed to where he had once lived.
*
As he approached the area, he started to wonder to himself if he should actually be doing this. He decided he didn’t care. He just wanted to see the woman who had been his wife one last time.

Suddenly an unpleasant thought came to him; what if she was no longer there? What would he do then?

Almost as if on cue, many more thoughts, thoughts that all ran along the same lines as the first, started racing through his mind.

What if everything had changed? What if nothing was there at all? Would he be able to find Chi Chi by sensing her ki, or would it have somehow changed, as a result of his use of Trunks’s Time Capsule? What if- Goku almost stopped dead in his tracks as a very unwelcome thought came to him-what if Chi Chi had found another man?

He mentally shook himself, at the same time chiding himself for letting his emotions make him forget why he used the Time Capsule in the first place.

I hope she has found a new man, he thought savagely. One that'll be there for her all the time. A man that won’t have her worried sick for his safety half the time, and for the safety of her young children. A normal man, he thought to himself bitterly. God knew she deserved such a man.

The house came into view, mercifully disrupting Goku’s unpleasant train of thought. He killed his speed and approached the housed cautiously, in case anyone was outside the house. He slowed even more, hoping like hell that he wouldn’t be seen if anyone was outside.

Thankfully, no one was, but he didn’t go too close to the house. He didn’t know what might happen if Chi Chi saw him, or even if anything would happen at all, but he didn’t want to risk it, just in case something arose as a result.
However, the knowledge that he couldn’t even go near the one he loved so much only served to make the pain even worse. He longed with all that was within him to be able to just hold her again, to be near her. Anything, just as long as things were normal again. If he could just be near her, he didn’t care what she did; he didn’t care if she scolded him, if she hit him, if she yelled at him, or even if she fought with him over Gohan’s studies…

Gohan…

Another sob escaped him as he thought of his young son. The son who, thanks to him, no longer even existed.
He thought that he would be able to bear it if Gohan had died; at least then he would’ve been able to pay his respects to his son, with everyone else that had been close to Gohan around him, but the knowledge that his son was now only a thought, that had he had never even been created, was just too much for him to handle.

He’d always known that there had been almost no realistic chance of him being around to see Gohan’s first date, of being at Gohan’s 21st, of being there for most of the important ‘1st’s in his son’s life. However, he had never thought that they might never actually happen, especially not as a result of something Goku had done. Even more so, he would never have ever guessed that such a thing would happen because of something he had done knowing what would occur as a consequence. He felt as though he had murdered his own son in cold blood.

Looking in through the window to what had once been his and Chi Chi’s room, he saw her asleep in her bed. To his extreme relief, it was almost exactly the same as when he had left the house that morning. For a while, he couldn’t work out what it was that was actually missing, then it hit him; the wall above the bed looked empty- their wedding photo had hung there for the entire length of time that he had lived there.
That one little difference made everything sink in at last. The enormity of what he had done, of just how different his life was going to be now, to how it had been that very morning, finally hit him.

He sat in the air above his old room, watching Chi Chi as she slept, heedless of the tears that were, once again, rolling unchecked down his face, falling the distance to the ground outside Chi Chi’s window, for what seemed like a few scant seconds, but was in reality at least half an hour.

Soon- too soon- he knew that he had already stayed too long. Chi Chi never slept for very long during the day, and would probably wake up any minute.

Despite the fact that his agonised heart was begging him to stay, Goku tore his gaze from Chi Chi’s peaceful features with an effort that was almost physical.

‘I love you,’ he whispered to Chi Chi, just before he turned to go…

…and ended up face to tear-streaked face with Krillin.
