"Once So Blue"

Chapter 1

Son Pan smiled.

Today would be the last day she would spend with her family for five years. She burned every single face into her memory. Remembering every smile, every twinkle in each eye of her friends and family. She was beginning to notice the smaller things in her families' faces. For instance how her Grandma Chi-Chi's delicate features really shone through when she smiled, or how Vegeta's eyes deceived the rest of his facial features. Small things like these she noticed. She was going to miss them all.

Especially one particular individual, with eyes so blue, the skies themselves envied him, and a rare hair color. Lavender. Strange, yet attractive on him. Yes the one and only Trunks Briefs.

Pan's feelings started to develop for him during the Black Star Dragonball hunt and over the last few years had only intensified, she felt very strongly about Trunks, you could even consider these feelings love.

But Pan knew her limits and Trunks was far beyond hers. She had lived with the burden of secretly loving Trunks for three years. A long time.

Through these last couple of years she had watched Trunks drift in and out of relationships with women. He never cheated on them and treated his past girl friends with the most utter respect, it seemed they just didn't suit him.

Pan was never sorry when she heard Trunks had broke up with his girlfriends, in fact she secretly rejoiced. It sent a small wave of hope against the huge wall of doubt and rejection she potentially faced.

Pan spied Trunks dancing with Marron but she wasn't jealous. Marron and Trunks were dancing as friends. Marron was Goten's fiancé, and Pan knew Marron would never cheat on Goten. The song finished and Trunks bowed toward Marron, causing the blonde to laugh light heartedly. Trunks saw Pan and approached her, grinning like an idiot.

"Hey Pan-chan," Trunks said, hugging her for the fiftieth time that night.

"Hello Trunks-kun," Pan said, returning the hug pleasantly, secretly enjoying him being so close.

The two stood in a comfortable silence, while Pan came to the decision it was now or never to tell Trunks her feelings. Actually she had been brewing this decision since she found out she would be leaving.

"Trunks-kun, may I speak with you alone outside?"

"Of course, Pan-chan. What do you need to talk about?"

"Come on," she said taking his hand and leading him on.

Once in the brisk air of the clear night, Pan felt better. The hazy atmosphere inside was getting on her last nerve.

"What was it you wanted to talk about?"

Pan turned her attention to Trunks and suddenly felt very nervous and unsure if her decision was very wise. Only a few minutes ago she was determined to do this and now she had butterflies in her stomach.

"Trunks. . . . . .I . . . . . ." Pan averted her attention back to the clear sky, the stars numbered the sky by the billions, wrapped in a protective and almost romantic blanket of midnight blue sky, Pan wished that Trunks would be her blanket, like the night sky is to the ever bright stars, "...I...want to admit my feelings to you," she rushed the last part, still keeping her attention on the stars.

A look of confusion crossed Trunks' face. "Feelings?"

"I...love you Trunks. It is strange but I swear to you I love you."

Pan turned her onyx orbs toward Trunks' face and saw a completely blank look. No look of sorrow. No joyous stare. No look of potential rejection. There was nothing and it got to Pan.

". . . ."

"Trunks, say something, anything. Answer me please," Pan begged. The silence was too much for her to bear. She didn't think she would receive a reaction such as this. She started chewing on her bottom lip as tears began to sting the back of her eyes. She was not going to cry in front of him. She couldn't.

"Pan. . . . . I . . . . . ."

Suddenly Pan felt his strong arms wrap around her and his warm lips press against hers. He moved so quickly she didn't even register his movements.

The kiss was exactly like Pan's dreams except for one tiny little detail. It was much better in real life. It was more intense, the raw emotion from the kiss sent shock waves of electricity throughout her body.

"How's that for an answer," he whispered against her lips, but didn't give her time to answer as he kissed her again.

A beam of the golden light caressed the ivory skin of a young women who sat up in the bed she was in. She stretched and popped her joints, gently lifting herself from the bed. Her lilac haired bed partner stirred and rolled over, still sleeping, his clear complexion looking innocent and handsome.

Pan stared at his face and smiled a loving smile. A beautiful night of passion spent with the man she loved more than anything in world.

Her mouth felt fuzzy and she could taste hints of alcohol in the back of her mouth. Pan was finally admitting to herself, Trunks was partially influenced by alcohol. Her heart started feeling lower and her hope that Trunks truly loved her was starting to dwindle.

She looked at the alarm clock beside the bed and sighed. In four hours she would be leaving for college, she wouldn't be returning for five years. That was a long time. Especially for a girl who was as family oriented as Pan. But when she was accepted to the college, her parents and grandmother told her to go. 'It was the chance of a lifetime', they said, 'Go, we can live with it.' Pan had decided to follow their wishes.

Pan put on her clothes and shoes. She would have to go home and shower. Pan knew she couldn't leave Trunks on a silent whelm. She loved him and she would leave him a letter.

After easily finding a pen and paper in Trunk's neatly arranged room, Pan started writing the letter.

Trunks Vegeta Briefs,

Fate can be cruel, can it not? Out of all of the people in this world, for some reason, my heart choose you as it's keeper. I love you Trunks, even though I know you never felt the same about me. This night we've spent together was amazing, but I wonder if your feelings were in it or if it was only the alcohol.

I must leave you Trunks with the hope that somewhere you do love me. But if you don't, perhaps with my five year absence will help me get over you.

Even if you do love me Trunks, it wouldn't work out.

Sincerely,

Son Pan

Placing the pen back in his desk, Pan taped the letter to the top of Trunks' desk and proceeded to make her way home.

Trunks rolled over and placed his arm on what he expected to be Pan, instead he found a cold empty spot.

"Panny?"

He rubbed his arm over the empty spot, it was cold. He sat up and his eyes searched around his room for his missing lover.

"Pan-chan?"

He got out of bed, naked as the day he was born, and started looking around his room.

"Pan? Where are you at?" He scratched his head. Where was his Pan-chan? He made his way to his desk and found a note. The neat handwriting matched Pan's. Picking the letter up, his curious eyes scanned the words. An expression of shock infiltrated his features and he remembered where his Panny was.

"She's gone!"

As the words left Trunks' mouth, his bedroom door opened, revealing Goten, his sister, and Marron.

"You know brother you really should lock thi. . . . ." Bra's words died in her throat at the site of her older brother, standing in the middle of his room, buck naked.

Marron blushed, Goten snickered, and Bra looked disgusted.

"Have fun last night Trunks?" Goten asked slyly.

Trunks blushed beet red and covered himself the best he could, "GET OUT!!"

Bra grabbed Marron's hand and the two left without being told twice. Goten, however, stayed a little bit longer.

"Who was the lucky girl?" Goten teased, as Marron grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and pulled Goten out of the bedroom.

Trunks, still outraged, pulled on the first articles of clothing he could find. His day was already off to a bad start. He had a killer headache, Pan had left and he didn't get to say goodbye, and then his sister and two bets friends walk in on him while he's naked.

And the worst part was he didn't get to tell Pan he loved her too.
