I Need No One Else But You
Chapter 2— Pan’s Graduation Bulla and Marron sat in Pan’s bedroom. An extra large pepperoni, sausage, ham and green pepper pizza sat between the three. “So, Pan,” Bulla said in between bites, “how much longer will you have until you graduate?” Pan got a huge grin on her face. “I have…about, three weeks left.” Her joy bubbled over and she did a backflip off her bed and cartwheeled twice. “Yay!!!” “So I guess asking you if you’re excited if out of the question,” Marron said with a smile of her own. “Oh, my gosh, you guys. I really can’t explain this. I am just so happy that it’s indescribable. All these years it took to get my law degree and to be a 20-year-old at that?” “Yeah, I guess you do have a reason to be happy. And we are happy for you, Pan.” Bulla raised her can of Pepsi to Pan. “To Pan and her graduation.” The three of them clinked their cans in a toast. The three of them stayed up late into the night talking and laughing. When they died down late into the morning, Pan fell asleep with a huge grin on her face at the thought of school being over. ***Three weeks later*** “Pan!” Gohan called. “Come on, honey! Are you ready to go yet? If you don’t hurry, you’re gonna be late for your own graduation!” “I’m coming, Dad!” Pan called back. Pan squealed. I’m so happy, she thought. All these years have finally paid off…I can’t wait to see everyone…especially Trunks. Her mind wandered into outer space. “Pa-aan!” Gohan whined. By that time, her father was growing impatient. She fell out of orbit and returned to Earth. Anyone who can turn a single-syllable name into two syllables is a good whiner, no, scratch that, a very good whiner. “I’m coming now, Dad!” She gave herself one last look in the mirror, grabbed her purse, and walked down the stairs. As soon as she hit the first step, she saw a bright flash. “Oh, Mom!” she complained. “Mom, not the camera!” “Honey, let your mother have her moments,” Gohan said with a smile. “You know how she gets around these occasions. Videl slapped Gohan in the shoulder in reply, not letting go of her camera. His daughter came down the rest of the stairs with a white black-and-blue-striped shirt, black pants, and high heels, cap and gown on her forearm. “Let’s go ladies. We’re going to be late,” Gohan said. He locked the door behind them. He flipped the cap and when the smoke cleared, they piled into the car and took off in the direction of Pan’s school. ~~O~~O~~ Sitting in the audience, the Son and Brief families took up an entire row. Hercule Satan sat next to Videl. Krillin, 18, and Marron were behind Gohan and Videl. Gohan sat in the audience with a handheld video camera and Videl sat with a digital camera. There Pan was, sitting in the audience in the front in her white cap and gown, proudly with her class. The law school she was graduating from was a small yet prestigious one so there would be time to announce everyone’s name. At long last, the speaker they had for the ceremony had finally finished her speech about deciding your future and being successful and whatnot. She yawned, a little louder than she meant to. Her friend Melanie nudged her in the ribs playfully with a smile. Pan smiled back, knowing what she meant: relief! Thank goodness this speech is over, Pan thought. I was starting to fall asleep...Uh-oh! I think my leg already did! She shook her leg out and then rubbed it to get the feeling back. After the guest finished the speech, Pan’s class stood up and formed a line by the rows they were sitting in. After fifteen minutes later, the line kept creeping closer to the stage and Pan got even closer. A few seconds later, Pan was on the stage and Gohan turned his camera back on and hit the “record” button. Videl began clicking away. “Son Pan!” Everyone in support of Pan cheered. Just that quickly, Gohan had quick flashbacks of the last twenty-two years: marrying Videl, their many nights of passion and love, finding out of Videl’s pregnancy, the labor, the birth, the late-night feedings, the training sessions, the boys, and every other event until this moment. He wiped his eye with a finger. Pan walked over to the president and received her degree, shook his hand, and then smiled and waved to her parents and the rest of the family. “That’s my granddaughter!” Hercule stood up and said proudly. Soon after, the rest of the graduation flew by. ******* Pan had finally finished taking pictures of and with her friends when she walked back to her family and friends. “Oh, Pan, I’m so proud of you, honey,” Videl’s eyes began to tear up. She hugged her daughter tightly and then took a stack of tissues from her purse to wipe her eyes. She grew up so fast that it’s so hard to believe! “Thanks, Mom,” Pan said as her mother released her. “I knew you could do it,” Gohan said as he gave her a fierce hug. “I’m proud of you too.” Pan continued to be hugged and fussed over just like everyone else. Her mother had about four or five rolls of film for her handheld camera. Pan took picture after picture with family and friends. “My grandbaby!” Chi Chi cried. She grabbed a handful of tissues from Videl’s stack and began to wipe her eyes. Sheepishly, Goku hugged Pan and gave her a kiss on her forehead and put a comforting arm around his sobbing wife. “Congratulations, Pan.” “Thank you, Grandpa,” she replied with a sheepish smile of her own. Pan and Trunks took almost a whole roll of pictures together. Marron and Bulla nudged each other because they were the only two people who noticed that. After another half-hour, Trunks pulled Pan aside. He gave her a strong hug and enveloped her hands in his. “Pan.” “Yes?” she said as she looked at him. “Pan, I am so proud of you. You are gonna make it in life. You’re smart, you’re beautiful, and you are a wonderful woman who is very special to me. If you ever need anything, call me.” He gave her a soft kiss on the cheek. “Congratulations on your graduation.” He pushed an envelope in her hand and walked off towards the bathroom. Stunned, Pan walked back around to where the rest of her family was as she looked at the envelope that Trunks pushed in her hand. It contained a check for 1000 zenni. Her eyes had widened. When Trunks came back over to her, she threw her arms around him and gave him a huge kiss on the lips. Luckily, the two were still away from the others. For Trunks, this surprised him a little, but he didn’t mind it. “Thank you for the gift, Trunks,” Pan said with eyes widened when she broke the kiss. I didn’t mean to do that, she thought. Did I? “You are special to me as well.” The two of them walked back to the others. The look on Pan’s face purely showed that she was in ecstasy. “How do you feel, Pan?” Marron asked, obviously knowing the answer to the question. She and Bulla shared a knowing glance. Trunks moved next to his sister. “I’m a graduate!” Pan shouted at the top of her lungs, with a gigantic smile on her face. Threequarter: I’m sorry this chapter was so short. I really tried to make it longer, but, you know… |
