I Need No One Else But You
Chapter 4— Pan’s Big Surprise Pan blinked and her eyes strained to adjust, not to an afternoon sun, but to the darkness of very early morning. Her digital radio clock displayed 2:57 a.m. She looked under her covers. Her hot pink tank top and black jogging shorts were still on. She looked over her shoulder to find that she was the only one in her huge bed. Pan sighed. Whew , she thought. It was only a dream . Even though she was relieved that it was just a dream, it saddened her a bit. Why can’t some dreams just be a reality for once? The only difference this time, she thought about it. She turned over and went back to sleep. When she woke up later on, Pan showered and dressed in a red V-neck sleeveless shirt, a pair of dark blue jeans, and red sandals. She looked at her clock. 1:15 p.m. Hmm, she thought. I’ve got some time. Pan made her bed and fixed herself brunch. Soon after, her phone rang. “Hey girl! What’cha doin’?” It was Bulla. “Nothin’.” “Wanna go with me to the mall?” She didn’t waste anytime thinking about that. Pan loved to shop. “Sure. Which one?” Bulla didn’t waste any time thinking about one of the biggest malls in her area she had ever been to. “Evergreen Mills.” “You wanna leave now?” “Why? What’s wrong? Is it a good time? Is my brother still sleeping?” she asked with that mischievous tone in her voice. Pan rolled her eyes at Bulla through the phone. “Yes and no, Bulla. He’s not even here.” “He left before you woke up?” Pan growled. “Bulla!” She laughed hysterically. “That’s not very funny, Bulla.” Pan crossed her arms. “I’m kidding, girl. Cool. See you!” “All right. Bye.” Pan hung up and shook her head. If there was one thing Pan didn’t like about Bulla was that she was always so pushy and always assumed that there was something going on with she and Trunks. Even though Pan wasn’t sure she wanted to admit it to other people, she wanted something more between them, especially after what happened in his office that day. She had always contemplated marriage to Trunks, but she wasn’t sure if he was ready or even if she was ready. Despite all of that, Pan had liked Trunks as a friend ever since their adventures of looking for the Black Star Dragon Balls. As she got older and the two of them matured and developed, she could see that there was something different about him than all the other guys she knew. She loved everything about him, his lavender hair, his smile, his electric blue eyes, and that body of his. Pan’s body shivered at the memory of it, especially after what had happened in his office. Her heart had jumped into her throat the first time she saw his masculine body. Even Eric never looked like that after he lifted weights. She was spending time with Bulla. He had just come out of the training room with his father. She guessed that they considered the room where they spent their ‘quality’ time, although she knew that was a lie. Vegeta was never one for showing emotion; that was definitely no secret. That black “Capsule” tank top he went in with became even blacker as the sweat from his body soaked it, in turn making the fabric darker. Pan had just walked into the kitchen to get a bottle of water when she saw him in the den. He took his sweat-soaked tank off and revealed the top of his glistening body. All of those bulging muscles that moved in harmonic motion and tensed. Pan shook her head as a loud noise interrupted her from her thoughts. Someone had knocked on her door. Everything was already off, she noticed because she didn’t use anything. She got up, slipped into her sandals, grabbed her keys and her pocketbook and looked out the peephole. Bulla was standing at her door. “Hang on a sec!” she yelled. She set her apartment alarm and opened the door. “Hey,” she said as she turned around to lock her door. Pan and Bulla walked out of her apartment building and into Bulla’s car. The two of them drove off into the direction of the mall. They shopped for so long that as they were in the food court, trying to regain some of the energy that Pan had to look at her watch. Her watch said 4:50. “Oh my gosh!” Pan cried. “What’s wrong?” Bulla tried to say, choking on her soda. She gasped for air. “Pan, what the heck is wrong?” “Bulla, we’ve gotta go! Oh, my God, I totally forgot! I’ve gotta be at my parents’ in ten minutes! I was supposed to be there for dinner tonight! ” Pan said. “Okay, Pan relax. It’ll be a lot faster if we fly.” “Still, Bulla, we need to go now ,” Pan insisted. “Fine, Pan,” Bulla said. The two girls picked up their purchases, put their trash in the trashcan, and headed on out from the mall. Luckily, Pan saw another outfit she liked and went ahead and bought it. After they came out of the store, the girls went out of the mall, found a back alley and took to the sky. ~~O~~O~~ Before they knew it, Pan and Bulla had landed at Videl and Gohan’s house. The girls had landed at the house a few minutes late. Pan fished her keys from her pocket and opened the door. “Mom! Dad!” Videl came running into the foyer. She enveloped her daughter in a great big hug. “Hi, Bulla.” “Hi, Videl,” Bulla said cheerfully. “I’m glad the both of you are here,” Videl said. “We need some ice. Bulla, do you want to stay for dinner?” “I’d be glad to,” she replied. “I’ll go with Pan to get the ice.” Videl got her pocketbook from the hook on the kitchen wall and handed Pan some money. “Good, we need ice, and hot dog and hamburger rolls. Apparently, your father forgot them when he went to the store earlier.” She rolled her eyes. “Make sure you get a lot of them, honey. You know how we can eat. Don’t be too long, okay?” “I won’t, Mom,” Pan put the money in her own wallet. “Give me your stuff, Bulla.” Pan took Bulla’s bags and hers and ran upstairs to put them in her old room. She stopped on the stairs and turned around. “Mom! Is something going on here?” “No, honey! Just dinner!” “Okay, Mom,” Pan said. Her lead feet thundered up the rest of the stairs. While Pan was gone, Videl and Bulla shared a wink and Videl gave Bulla a thumbs-up. Pan came back downstairs and gave her mom a kiss. “We won’t be gone long, Mom.” She grabbed Bulla by the arm and out the door. They flew to the nearest grocery store. ~~O~~O~~ “We got the stuff you wanted, Mom!” Pan said. No one answered her. “Mom!” She and Bulla came around through the kitchen and put the ice in the freezer and the rolls on the table. She opened the back door and walked out. The grill is going, she thought. If Dad wanted to fry my hot dogs, all he had to do was throw them in a frying pan with oil! “Surprise!!!!” Pan gasped as she turned and looked. Everyone was standing in her backyard. Gohan, Videl, Hercule, Goku, Chi Chi, Goten, her friends Melanie and Casey from college, Marron, Krillin, 18, Bulma, Vegeta, and…Trunks. Bulla had a huge grin on her face. She pulled her by the arm into the backyard. Tears began to glisten in Pan eyes. “Ohhhh,” she said as her eyes glazed over. “I don’t know what to say.” She grabbed a napkin from the table and dabbed her eyes. Bulla went back in the house and got out the things they bought. She put them on the table as well. Gohan walked over to Pan and hugged her. “We got you, didn’t we?” With a laugh, Pan nodded. The party got underway. Bulla got two sodas out of the cooler and handed one to Pan. Music filled the afternoon air. Gohan stood at the grill and flipped the hamburgers with a spatula in one hand and a light beer in the other. Videl came next to him and took the plate of the burgers that were done. He turned and kissed her on the lips and whispered something in her ear. Videl pushed him away, laughing. “You are crazy,” she said with a smile on her face. The cake that sat on the table had her graduation picture on it and read, “Congratulations, Pan!” After she cut her cake and passed it out, she used her index finger and slid the buttercream icing off her knife and licked her finger. After Pan gave Trunks his cake, he slid his arms around her in a hug and stole a kiss from her. Luckily, no one was watching. The hours had passed by. Bulla, Marron, and Pan were so engrossed in deep conversation that they didn’t even notice Trunks come over to them and clear his throat. He gently tapped Pan on the shoulder. “Excuse me, Pan, can I talk to you for a minute, please?” he asked. “Sure, Trunks. Excuse me, guys.” Pan walked next to Trunks as they walked through the woods. ~~0~~0~~ Pan walked next to Trunks until he stopped. “What’s up?” she asked him with one of her hands on her hips and a questioning look in her eyes. Okay, Trunks , he thought to himself. You’ve gotten this far…head for the finish line . He took Pan’s hands in his. “Pan, you are the only woman I have ever loved from day one and loved with my whole heart and soul. All I can say is that I really, truly, love you.” Pan gasped as he took out a midnight blue velvet box. “Pan, look. I know that neither of us are both quite ready for marriage, but there is something I have to tell you. I love you so much. One day and one day soon I hope, it would be an honor and I want you to become my wife.” Pan was just about speechless. “Trunks…I love you too, and I accept,” was all she could muster in a soft voice. With a huge grin on his face, Trunks opened the box and pulled out a one-carat diamond solitaire. He slid it onto Pan’s ring finger. They looked at each other, smiled and the two young Saiyans shared a loving kiss. “I know it’s not an engagement ring, but…” he trailed off. “It’s okay. I’ll call it a promise ring. But, it doesn’t matter to me. As long as one day I know that I am going to marry you…” she trailed off herself. He caught that. “You look like you have something you want to say to me, Pan.” She exhaled. “Trunks, I really do have something to say…I’ve always liked you for the longest time, but I was afraid because you were older and I was this little 15-year-old kid. Plus, I really thought I didn’t have a chance with you. But, as I got older, my feelings for you became deeper and my liking you turned into loving you.” Trunks looked at her. “Pan, I have always thought of you as a little sister, especially when your grandfather went to help Uub. But, the more I watched you grow up and you developed, I began to get these feeling for you, but I wanted to suppress them because I was afraid of what people would say about us. But now, I really could care less about what people have to say. In a way Pan, I have always loved you and now that I know I do, I don’t ever what to lose you.” A tear escaped Pan’s ebony eye. “Oh, Trunks,” she whispered. He smiled, wiped it away, and the two kissed again. ********* With arms on each other’s waist, Pan and Trunks walked out of the woods, smiling. When they came back out of the woods, Bulla looked at them in surprise. The sky had turned from a gentle orange to a harsh and upsetting gray. Thunder sounded close and rain slowly began to fall. Gohan turned the grill off and as fast as they could, all of the women, including Pan, moved all of the food inside the house. All of the men, except for Trunks and Gohan, went downstairs into the basement. Trunks moved to help Pan put everything away until Gohan pulled Trunks into one of the rooms on the first floor and closed the door partly. “So, Trunks,” he said. “What’s that little shiny thing on my daughter’s ring finger?” Trunks took a couple of steps back and raised his hands, as if to step off. He took a deep breath and chose his words very carefully. “Gohan, listen to me…I gave Pan a promise ring.” Gohan turned red and took a deep breath. “Trunks…what the—what do you mean, ‘a promise ring’?” Trunks took another deep breath. “Gohan, look, I know what you’re thinking, and with all do respect, you are wrong. I made two mistakes when I was younger; we both know that. Pan is the one woman that I truly care about. I think you know that I care for her, and that’s why you’re getting so pissed at me, isn’t it?” “Yes!” Gohan yelled. “How do I know that the way you’ve treated those girls won’t be the same way you treat my daughter sometime down the road? Huh?!! Answer me that?!!!” “Because I love your daughter!” Trunks yelled. A loud sheet of lightning illuminated across the span of black sky at the moment. Threequarter: Atmospheric, isn’t it? |
