SEVENTEEN Debs-dragon Dec 2001 Chapter 1
"Hey Psyprass. Where are you?" The call was somewhat muffled by the density of the surrounding vegetation. Before a reply could pass her lips a slim blonde broke through into the clearing colliding with the brown haired teen who now stood frozen to the spot. "There you are! Why didn't you answer me? I've been calling you for ages." The blonde rattled on, not giving the other a chance to reply. "I found some really big mushies over this way, and I mean they are huge! Why there must be around....." Calisto found herself halted in mid sentence as Psyprass reached out and grabbed her arm squeezing hard. "Shhh." she said "B..b...b...but what the..." "Quiet!" hissed Psyprass. Calisto, looking most offended, shut up and stared at Psyprass, a scowl forming across the normally placid face. "Humph!" she said & stared angrily at her friend. Psyprass's grip tightened slightly on the arm and she pointed to the undergrowth. Calisto's eyes followed the line of the point and gasped as she saw the sneaker. "It's on a foot." whispered Psyprass. Calisto swallowed. "I don't know if it is attached to a leg...." continued Psyprass. Calisto stared at her friend then back to the sneaker. "Do we really want to find out?" she asked. "I think we had better." said Psyprass and she inched a little closer. Calisto stayed where she was. She was more than close enough thankyou! Psyprass, feeling much braver now that she had her friend with her picked up the stick and once more pushed it into the vegetation slowly pulling the plants apart. A pair of jean clad legs came into view. At least parts of the jeans still remained. Faded & worn, with holes from decay and other means evident on the dirty fabric Psyprass judged they had been here for a while. Concerned about what else she may find Psyprass pushed on. Moving the branches apart even more she discovered a torso and arms, then she screamed as the head, released from the vines that had been restraining it fell forward onto the chest. Hearing the scream Calisto's eyes widened and her body took on the classic stance of 'fight or flight'. Psyprass jumped back in fright and knocked Calisto's bucket of mushrooms flying, but neither girl paid much heed, their attention fully focused on the body of the boy in the bushes. Dimly a recollection began to form in Psyprass's brain. Her eyes scanned over the inert form as she tried to coax that memory forth then *wham* The door opened and the memories came in a flood. She gasped. Calisto's hazel eyes turned to her friend who was now as white as a sheet, and beginning to tremble. Reaching forward she touched the other girls arm. "Psyprass..... What is it? Whats wrong? You look like you have seen a ghost." said Calisto. Psyprass shuddered and closed her eyes. "I think I have." she said softly. "Huh?" "Do you remember what we learnt in history class?" she asked. "Ummm.... No...not really." replied Calisto. "Think back to when we were discussing the dark times." Calisto screwed up her face as she rummaged through her memories. "I remember some of it. Not much though. Any reason why I should?" "I think that this is one of the Androids that was responsible for some of the dark times." replied Psyprass, and her brow furrowed as she searched through the corridors of her mind. "But weren't they supposed to have been swallowed or absorbed or something like that by that thing called..err... umm... Cell?" asked Calisto quirking an eyebrow. "I knew that the one Android had come back but I didn't know that the other one had escaped as well." said Psyprass and she moved closer to the android. "Careful." muttered Calisto Psyprass crouched low and manoeuvred into the area where the boy was contained. She reached forward & felt the skin on the neck, not sure if she should be looking for a pulse or not. The skin was faintly warm to the touch which both shocked and suprised Psyprass. There wasn't a pulse. She studied the android closely, noting the torn clothing, dirty thick black locks and in some areas the wires and metal of the skeleton which showed through from deep wounds. From her observations she concluded that the android was still operational .... to a point. She squatted back on her haunches and pondered the situation. Calisto cleared her throat. "So, what have you found?" she asked. "I think he could be salvaged." said Psyprass. "Your joking!!!" came the stunned reply. "No. I think I can fix him and get him up & running again." Psyprass ran her fingers through her dark locks as she contemplated the task. "Your serious! You really think that you can salvage that... thing!..." snorted Calisto. "He's not a thing!" replied Psyprass as she leant forward to study the android closer. "If what I remember from school about him and his sister and what they did then there isn't anything else you could call him!" stated Calisto. Psyprass pressed in again and grasping one arm she began to tug at the android, pulling him out of his green cocoon. At first he resisted not wanting to leave what had been his 'home' for so many years but then with one final tug he gave up and fell forward knocking Psyprass flat on her back. Psyprass looked up, stunned from her undignified position underneath the android. As the android fell forward so Calisto gave a startled yelp and sprang backwards. She stopped her bodies desire to run and turned back. As she took in the sight before her the corner of her mouth began to twitch and curl upwards as she tried to suppress a giggle. "Thats right... go ahead & laugh." scowled Psyprass. The sight of her friend pinned underneath the android, arms & legs thrashing as she tried to extract herself only served to send Calisto into even more hysterics. Psyprass waited till her friends mirth had subsided before again asking if she could possibly help her out from underneath the android. :"Oh I dont know... you look like a good couple to me." she giggled helplessly. Psyprass groaned. Thats all she needed! A while later and with much grunting, groaning & sweat the android was removed from on top of Psyprass and between the two of them they managed to drag him through the forest and back to their home. "Phew!!" exclaimed Calisto as she flopped into a chair. "That wore me out!" "Same here." said Psyprass as she joined her friend. "Now what?" asked Calisto. "Once we have our strength back I thought we could put him in the workshop and then I can take a really good look at him and make a much better assessment of the damage and repairs that will need to be done, thats if he's worth repairing. "Be careful. You don't know whats in that head of his." said Calisto with a shudder. She was glad it wasn't her that was going to be working on that *thing* It had given her the creeps just helping to get it home. The knowledge that it was in the workshop made her really jittery. Psyprass nodded deep in thought. "Don't worry. I plan to take certain precautions." she said. Several days passed and Psyprass worked diligently on the android, to the point where Calisto began to protest. "All you ever do is work on that *thing* " grumbled Calisto as they sat eating their evening meal. "I've almost got to the memory banks." replied Psyprass " I will be glad when you have finished. It gives me the creeps knowing that *its* out there. Not to mention that I'm also stuck doing your share of the chores!" Calisto pouted. Psyprass looked at her friend and raised her hand to her mouth. "I'm sorry, I had forgotten all about the chores." Calisto looked up. "Well I'm not suprised with
your obsession for Mr tall, dark & handsome out there." she
said slyly. "Well you do seem to spend every waking moment with him." smirked Calisto. "I told you, I'm only trying to fix him." said Psyprass as she turned a shade deeper red "But what for?" *Good question.* Thought Psyprass. *Just what are you trying to fix him for?* Calisto sighed. "Oh never mind, forget I even asked that question." Psyprass looked up. "I'm sorry. I know it seems to have become an obsession with me but try to understand. I'm pretty sure that I can fix him up and get him functioning again. Once I do that then I was hoping we can get him to help society by working & repairing some of the damage that has been done." Calisto's mind wandered over Psyprass's proposal. "You really think that you can re build & re programme him then?" "I wouldn't be spending all my time out there working on him if I didn't think there was a chance." replied Psyprass. Calisto's brow crinkled as she thought. "Hmmm...." Psyprass frowned. Calisto rubbed her chin Psyprass waited patiently "I think I may know someone who might be able to help you." said Calisto. Psyprass's eyebrows disappeared into her hair line at this revelation. "You do?" Calisto looked at the other girl. "If I remember correctly, the other android, the one that we know for certain was brought back, was changed somehow." Psyprass stared, her emerald eyes clouded as she searched the recesses of her brain looking to locate any information that may be stored there that could shed light on the androids. Calisto waved her hand. "Anyway I'm sure that I read somewhere that the android that was called 18 got married recently." :Yeah, I remember reading something along those lines
as well." said Psyprass. Psyprass smiled as the information registered. "Your a genius Calisto!" she said. "I am?" grinned Calisto. "I've been called a lot of things in my time but a genius wasn't one of them." "Well what are we waiting for? Lets get cracking ." said Psyprass and she got up from the table. "Ummm... okay... Now what was it we were going to do again?" asked Calisto as she followed Psyprass. ******************************************************* Matty answered the ringing of the phone and frowning called for Juu. Juu, noticing Matt's dark expression on the normally calm face took the phone with a ripple of apprehension. Matt moved back & walked slowly towards the kitchen, he didn't want to pry. Juu raised the hand piece to her ear and spoke "Juuhachigou here." she said in her soft voice. Matty heard the soft click as the receiver was replaced in its cradle and stuck his head around the door frame. Juu stood leaning against the wall, her arms folded, one leg crossed over the other, deep in thought. Matty walked towards her and put his hands upon her shoulders. She looked up, her eyes unfocused. "Juu.... Juu... What is it? Whats wrong? " asked Matty, his eyes betrayed the concern he tried to hide inside. As Juu's eyes moved over Matt's face studying the features so a tear escaped and ran down the porcelain cheek. Then suddenly she lunged forward and wrapped her arms fiercely around Matt's frame and buried her head against his shoulder. The tears began to flow unchecked. Matthew held her close, lovingly and gently he stroked
her back waiting for the torrent to subside. The anger began to manifest
itself in his soul. The thought that someone had *hurt* his beloved
sent his blood pressure skyrocketing. Finally the tears began to slow
to a sniffle and Matt led Juu gently to the kitchen. He sat her down
and removing his handkerchief from his pocket he began to wipe the
tears from the sweet face. When he was done he sat opposite and taking
Juu's hands in his own asked the question again. "Juu, What has
upset you like this? Juu looked deep into Matty's blue eyes finding the love
and support that she needed there. She swallowed. "I... I...
I'm not sure if I should be happy, sad or afraid." "That someone claims to have found my brother." Juu watched Matt's face carefully for clues as to what emotions this revelation would invoke. Matty gasped, paled and became light headed as the blood drained from his face. The shock of Juu's words registering in his protesting brain. "Seventeen is alive?" he managed to whisper, all other speech deserting him for a moment. "Yes. It would appear so. This person claims to have found him pretty much in tact and is at this moment trying to repair him. There is currently no indication of what the memory banks or personal data banks may or may not contain... that is assuming they are functional...." As his mind went into overdrive processing this information so the full implications of the possible outcomes of Juunanagou's resurrection began to sink in. "Oh.. god... no..." was all he could muster. Juu looked at him, a mixture of sadness, hope & confusion passed fleetingly across her features then she dropped her eyes before Matt could see the pain that was also etched within her soul. "I have to go and see him... I have to see for myself..." she trailed off. Matthew pulled himself back to the real world. "Your not going alone. I'm comming too." he stated firmly. Juuhachi gave his hand a light squeeze. "Thanks, I was hoping you would say that." She reached forward and cupping Matt's face she brushed her lips lightly across his, "Love you." Matt reached across and stole a kiss for himself, capturing and plundering Juu's lips with his own. "Love you too." he murmured
