CHAPTER 16 : THE BIRTH OF TANIS
Arianna groaned, the pain becoming immeasurable, she grabbed hold
of Trunks by his shirtfront and pulled him down so they were nose
to nose. "If you ever do this to me again, so help me, I'm going
to de-ball you the hard way! You understand me?" Her voice became
deathly quiet. Her face grimaced in pain as yet another contraction
wrapped it's painful way around her abdomen and tried to squeeze the
tiny life she carried within her out. "Damn men," She muttered
beneath her breath. "Why do they get to have all the fun and
we women pay for it nine months later, it's so damn unfair! AAAHHHHHHHH!!!"
She screamed, the pain becoming greater with each passing second.
"I swear I'm going to kill you when this is all done and over
with. I MEAN it Trunks! I'm going to-AAAHHHHH!" Again she was
broke off as her body rebelled against her mind. She fought with the
pain, trying to bring it under control, but in the test of wills,
the pain won out and she screamed again.
"Ok, where is that stupid doctor at?" Her eyes frantically
searched around the delivery room. "Where did he go? He better
have gone to get me some drugs, nice heavy duty one's would be nice.
Something that's going to take the bite off the edge of this pain.
Or else I'm going to put a bite on him he won't ever forget!"
Her eyes grew wide as yet another contraction grabbed her insides
and squeezed. Her dark green-blue eyes looked up at Trunks, "Next
time it's your turn." She said. "I quit, I'm not doing this
again, you understand. You get to carry the little brat next time."
She bit down on her lower lip, a small drop of blood ran down her
chin.
"Um, Arianna dear?" Bulma started to say.
Forest-ocean eyes turned to look murderously at the aging woman. "What!"
She hollered, "And it had better be good!"
Bulma smiled nervously, "I just thought maybe you might not want
to bit on your lip so hard, you're drawing blood dear," She looked
over at her son, silently asking for some help on the subject.
"Don't worry," Arianna laughed, actually laughed. "I've
got enough blood, a few little drops aren't going to hurt me that
much." She clenched her teeth together again, her eyes grimacing
shut as another contraction hit, far more worse than any of the ones
before it. "Some one had better get this kid out of me before
I do something I just might regret...or enjoy!" Her eyes malevolently
looked around the room, like she was looking for anything to rip to
shreds.
Trunks' bolted out of the room in search of the doctor before his
wife decided to make good on her threat, which he knew should would.
He stopped at the nurses station, "Excuse me," he said,
gaining the attention of the two elderly nurses who had been gossiping
about hospital business. "My wife is in labor and is asking for
the doctor, she's insisting that the baby be removed before she does
something rash."
The oldest nurse, but it was hard to tell which was older, laughed
at Trunks, "Most women usually do threaten that when their in
labor, it's actually quite a normal part of the labor process, just
like when they tell you that if you come near them again, they're
going to kill you."
The other nurse added, "And when they start asking for the pain
meds, or start to threaten you that next time your going to carry
the baby. It's all part of the natural facts of birth. It's really
nothing to get so worried about young man." The two resumed their
chat about hospital gossip.
"Trunks!" He heard his mother yell. "I really think
you should get in here! There's going to be a cat-atsrophe if the
doctor isn't in here soon too!"
Trunks eyes the two nurses who were once again looking at him, this
time in a most peculiar way. "You better find the doctor, and
I mean quickly. Arianna has a very small temper fuse. She'll start
tearing that room apart soon if the doctor isn't in there quickly."
With that said, he turned around and headed back into the room his
wife was seriously contemplating tearing apart.
"What a strange young man," the younger nurse said to the
other.
"I whole heartily agree, must be his first child, wouldn't you
say?" the other asked.
******************************************************************************************
Kuilian turned his head up to the midnight black skies.
She was in labor, he could feel her pain, like it was his own. *Arianna,*
he silently called. Her pain flooded his mind and he had to close
the contact. Her pain was to great, she hadn't even heard his mental
call.
Kyetta stirred next to him, the night breeze gently stirring her soft
blond hair. "How are you feeling my love?" He asked, looking
down at her. Her back rested against the same tree he was leaning
against. Her face was turned up towards him, her eyes shining with
love and adoration. Her jaw was hinged shut, still healing from the
blow that had broken it. *The Cowardly One is lucky he did no more
than beat you,* Kuilian thought harshly. *If Trunks' sister's friend
had not killed him, I would've done it myself!* His eyes turned hatefully
back up to the dark skies. *He is lucky he did no more or I would
wish more punishment on him in the bowels of hell than what he is
enduring now and for the rest of his torturous eternity.*
*Kuilian it does you no good to dwell on what has transpired in the
past.* Kyetta's soft voice invaded his dark thoughts. "Arianna
is safe and I will heal. Luck was with our family on this, not Pinath's.*
*Speak not the Cowardly One's name! His name deserves not to be uttered
by any Arcaticain again. He shames his people and his family the bastard
got just what he deserved, for what he did to you and Arianna, though
I think he deserved more than just the knife to the back, even that
was to good for him.* Kuilian's eyes narrowed, looking off into the
distance. Distorted pictures flashed before his eyes' pictures of
what was to come, of what may be?
Arianna grunting in pain, a flash of pain crossing her beautiful face,
Trunks holding an infant half-breed Arcaticain baby girl...Arianna's
funeral...the door to the tomb being sealed closed...thunder booming
in the distance as a storm unleashed it's fury at the cruelty of the
world below...the infant child began to cry, calling for a mother
that would never be there again...Iterias, Hiurian, Kuilian and Arianna's
father stepping off of a huge space ship.
Kuilian blinked his eyes, the meaning behind the vision penetrating
his foggy mind: Arianna was going to die!
******************************************************************************************
"One more push Arianna and this will all be over
with," The doctor said, gently tugging on the child's head, trying
to assist it out into the world. "Just one push."
Arianna bore down, pushing with everything that she had left. Grunting
in pain, grimacing as white hot balls of pain exploded before her
eyes she screamed. A blackness far darker than anything she had ever
seen before engulfed her, wrapping her in it's warm embrace.
She heard their voices in the distance, like they were in another
room. "There's so much blood, that can't be good." Trunks
voice, full of worry.
"Can't you do something to stop it?" Bra's frantic voice,
laden with tears.
"We're trying," the doctor said.
"You have to do something, anything!" Trunks again, this
time he sounded helpless.
"We're trying, but I'm afraid we're going to loose one or the
other" the doctor's voice said.
*Loose one or the other? Who are they talking about?* Arianna wondered,
the darkness growing thicker, she imagined if she reached out she
would be able to grasp it in her hands. *Where is this place?* She
glanced around, trying to find anything tangible in the thickening
darkness.
"She can't die, not now." Trunks again, he sounded further
away, a great distance away from her.
"You have to do something!" Bra's voice, but it was only
a soft whisper.
"What about the baby?" Bulma's voice, *When had she gotten
here?* Arianna wondered, *I thought she was still in the waiting room,
with the others.*
"Is the brat ok?" Vegeta, his voice had lost some of it's
usual gruffness, he actually sounded worried.
"Can you stop the bleeding or not?" Trunks asked, the frustration
evident in his voice.
"She's hemorrhaging to badly, I'm sorry?" the doctor's voice
again, but so very far away this time, she could barely understand
what he saying.
The last thing Arianna heard as the darkness fully engulfed her was
the shrill cry of a baby. Her baby. The baby she would never get to
see, not now. Fate was a cruel thing and had taken her from her child
shortly after the infant's birth.
******************************************************************************************
The sky let loose that solemn summer's day, the downpour
soaking everyone in mere minutes, but no one seemed to notice. Their
eyes were glued to the coffin that was being slowly taken into the
tomb. Trunks' glanced at the small bundle he held in his arms, Arianna's
last gift to him before her passing. Bulma walked over to him, placing
her arms around her distraught son. Vegeta repositioned the umbrella
that partially covered Trunks' head. His son looked up at him and
smiled his thanks.
"Just so the brat doesn't get wet." Vegeta mumbled, hooking
a finger under the blanket that covered the infant's face. He pulled
it back and looked down at the most amazing pair of blue eyes he had
ever seen. A small lock of lavender hair fell down into her eyes and
she blinked, staring at the offending lock of hair. She then focused
her eyes on her grandfather and smiled, making soft cooing noises.
"I think she likes you Grandpa," Bulma laughed, nudging
Vegeta in the ribcage.
Vegeta mumbled something beneath his breath but didn't take his eyes
off of his granddaughter.
Iterias stepped up to Trunks, "My father is on his way"
Iterias said, looking down at the child in Trunks' arms. "He
wants to see the child, the child Arianna gave her life up for."
"Tanis," Trunks said.
"Is...is that what you named her?" Iterias asked.
"It's the name Arianna chose. That's what she wanted to call
the baby." Trunks' voice was a monotone, no emotion.
"I see?" Was all Iterias could think to say.
Arianna was entombed that day, and Trunks swore he would not hide
the identity of the child from herself or anyone else. Arianna's parents
came to visit the child often, Kuilian and Kyetta remained on Earth,
but the rest of their kind returned home to Arcatica.
And that is how Destiny's Road ends....but nothing is as it seems.
Please give me feedback, it's the only way I know you
like what your reading...it also helps to motivate me to write. If
I get enough feedback I just might actually get the sequel to this
story going and it's going to be full of surprises. Most of them happy...some
maybe not so. Hope you enjoyed the last and final chapter to this
particular story, even though it was very sad!
